IT System Engineer for Directory Services (m/f/d)

Max Planck Computing and Data Facility, Garching

Job offer from April 11, 2024

The Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF), based at the research campus Garching near Munich, is a competence center of the Max Planck Society. MPCDF operates large supercomputers and several smaller computing systems as well as data repositories for various Max Planck institutes, and one of the largest academic archival systems within Europe.

The MPCDF is looking for a IT System Engineer for Directory Services (m/f/d) - Reference: 02/2024

The computer and data infrastructure at the MPCDF – consisting of HPC systems, clusters, cloud, and data-services – is based on a complex identity and authorization management system for the several thousands of users at the MPCDF. We are looking for a qualified candidate experienced in the management and configuration of different directory services to join our AAI team. We want to integrate the small Windows AD into our main Unix-based LDAP/Kerberos-environment and unify the different software-flavors. The chosen candidate will grow into a leading role in the further development, implementation and operation of the Identity and Authorization management (IAM) systems for the MPCDF and their integration with other Max Planck Institutes.

The applicant should have a Bachelor or Masters degree in Computer Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a similar subject, but with a strong and clear experience in IT.

Your profile

  • Skills and experience in several of the following areas would be ideal, but your motivation to learn is just as important:
  • Experience with directory services technologies (LDAP, Kerberos, Active Directory)
  • Programming and scripting experience (e.g. Python, Bash, or others)
  • Good knowledge of Linux administration including the use of DevOps tools such as Ansible
  • Experience with git as well as code versioning and review workflows
  • Creativity for problem solving under changing conditions, as well as accuracy and attention to details

The area of responsibility includes

  • Modernization and further development of the existing LDAP environment
  • Integration of Windows AD with Unix-LDAP and Kerberos
  • Administration and operation of the IAM systems
  • Linux server administration via SSH and server deployment with Ansible

The position – preferred full-time, but also with the option for part-time employment – starts as soon as possible and is initially limited to a period of 2 years, with an option for a permanent position. Salary is on experience according to the German TVöD.
