Kokkos: The Why, the Who and the How

- Christian Trott is a High Performance Computing expert at Sandia National Laboratories, where he co-leads the Kokkos core team, developing performance portability solutions for engineering and science applications. He is Co-Chair of the ISO C++ committees library working group (LWG) and is a principal author of features like mdspan and linear algebra. Recently, he helped establish the High Performance Software Foundation and serves on its governing board. Before joining Sandia, Christian earned a doctorate in theoretical physics from the University of Technology Ilmenau.

Over the last decade the Kokkos project has grown to be the leading solution to writing performance portable software for HPC.Originally started at Sandia National Laboratories, Kokkos is now a Linux Foundation project, and member of the High Performance Software Foundation.Developed by a multi-institutional team spanning the US and Europe, Kokkos provides the proven ability for HPCdevelopers to write single source software that can efficiently run on all modern HPC platforms including CPUs (X86,ARM and RISC-V) as well as GPUs (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel). Furthermore, partnerships with new competitors in the hardware space are ongoing to provide support for architectures that go beyond those established choices.This talk will introduce the Kokkos project, why you should consider using Kokkos, who is behind the project, and how Kokkos provides a more productive solution to write modern HPC software.
